New Year, New Room Refresh Challenge | Master Bedroom: The Reveal Part II

If you haven’t heard me say it before, then listen up! These curtains were a GAME CHANGER in our master bedroom!! I revealed Part I of our master bedroom refresh for the New Year, New Room Challenge, and today I’m finally sharing Part II! There is a tiny ounce of me that wishes I wouldn’t have shared anything until the curtains were up – it was THAT much of a transformation, but I was still so excited about where the room had gone. Have you ever seen something so amazingly awesome and you know if you buy it, it would look soooo good in your home? It just screams YOU! You just have to have it, until you flip it over to look at the sticker or scroll down and read that number after the $ sign…and well, your dreams have been crushed. Yeah, me too.

This is the case so often with high end designer home decor pieces. I want them so badly, but just can’t justify it sometimes. Ok, a lot of the time. I mean, if it were only my birthday a few more days outside of the entire month of February. Yes, I pretty much celebrate for a month. ok, at least a week! [Yesterday was my birthday, so I’m hoping to get a couple bday related posts out this week!]

When Jess from Domicille 37 invited a group of bloggers to participate in a monthly challenge titled “Knock it Off DIY” – I knew I had to say yes. So, today kicks off the very first challenge and what are we knocking off? Any coveted Kate Spade home decor piece! The stuff could not be any prettier – classy, sassy and usually with a lot of bling. However, these items also come with a pretty price tag…or, not so much. Continue reading

Gift it: Books for your Little Reader

Happy Saturday! And woot woot for the weekend before Christmas! I am popping in quickly today to share a gift guide with you!

If you are like me, then you might be rounding up a few last minute gifts for the kids, counting them out making sure both have equal number of packages and finding the perfect stocking stuffers! So, I thought while I am shopping away on Amazon to ensure everything will arrive on time, I thought I would share a few of my oldest son, Henry’s favorite books – as he is most certainly a little book worm!
20140126_0325He’s now 3, but here he is at his 18 month photoshoot with Photography by Robin Joy, LLC reading and playing with his carry-around-absolutely-everywhere foam letters!
20140126_0237They are meant for the tub, but we literally had them in every room in the house and every diaper bag & purse we owned because they were his THING!
He has had his nose in a book since before he could talk or walk. He could recite the alphabet forwards and backwards at age 2 and before he turned 3, was reading, writing and spelling! It has made the whole “Let’s get the kids ready for B-E-D or should we S-K-I-P   B-A-T-H tonight? thing sort of useless…he calls us out every time!!
Playroom DIY Reading Nook - This is our BlissYou might remember back to the Playroom Reading Nook series I created on the blog last year. I knew our little guy, and someday his younger brother, were going to need a spot to sprawl out and read, so with a little DIY elbow grease, it came to life!

Reading is by far his favorite thing to do! Check out the books below if you are looking for one more thing to add under the tree! Hopefully your little ones will enjoy them as much as he has!

5 Fab Friday Finds | Festive Fall Cloth Napkins

Ok – I’ve officially decided. I’m never buying another throw pillow. #yeahright

Ok, so I don’t think I could put a stop to my pillow shopping madness even if I tried, but I do know this. I am so going to be making another set or several more DIY cloth napkin pillows yet this year. If you are a This is our Bliss Facebook page “liker” (which I hope you are!) then you have already seen my holiday napkin find. It’s too good….

51UB3tAQN9L
Pretty. sure. you’ll be seeing these pop up around my house come December 😉 Probably on my couch…or my table…or both! This 12 red, white and black plaid napkins is only $19.99 – that’s like 6 pillows for 20 bucks. I don’t think you can even score that at GW.

So today…wait for it… I’m sharing…

5 Fab Cloth Napkin finds!

I love a classic stripe! These fall-ish colored striped napkins would look fabulous on your fall or Thanksgiving table. You really can’t go wrong with a stripe in any color – so timeless! Also, $19.99 for a set of 12 😉 L320_FRThis set is super cute for obvious reasons. This gorgeous turkey might end up stealing the show. I found these at Loom Décor, where you can create custom napkin sets starting at just $38! Again, if you want to use them for pillows, you’ve scored yourself a MAJOR deal here. Their variety is crazy huge!
81M3VC9ATcL__SL1500_And these….well if you know me, then you know my heart is jumping out of my chest right now! I mean these large-scale black and white checks (also known as buffalo plaid) are ah-mazing. The set of 6 even comes in this steel bucket and is available in 3 different colors!

If you saw my Thanksgiving table last year, then you’ll see you can go absolutely anywhere with your color scheme. I love black and white everything with pops of glitz and glam, so a stripe, check or plaid in these classic colors is a DO any time of the year!

Paisley says warm and inviting to me, so these paisley napkins would also make a lovely addition to your table or couch this season. The colors are a bit more traditional for a fall gathering, but the pattern still gives off a fresh, chic look.
6-22-harvest-napkinAnd these Crate & Barrel “Harvest” napkins are spot-on for autumn and into Thanksgiving, but would surely make a great addition to a summer tablescape or BBQ, too! Maybe it’s my inner Iowa girl surfacing 😉

Call me a coo-koo cloth napkin lady, but I think I need all of them!

Pattern Play | Pretty Plaid

Nothing. I mean, nothing says warm & cozy like PLAID. It enters the scene in the fall and transitions right on in to winter. Of course you can totally rock a plaid print all year round and with such a variety out there now, you have limitless options! One of the easiest ways to add a touch of fall into your home, other than scattering pumpkins everywhere, is to add a plaid throw blanket to the back of a chair or the arm of a sofa. Similarly, toss a couple of plaid fall throw pillows on the couch or in your entryway and call it a day!

Today, I am sharing some of my favorite plaid gear – for the home and for your closet!

How to DIY oversized word ART -Fall entryway - fall vignette - DIY word art - fall decor - This is our Bliss

How to: DIY Oversized [Fall] Word Art

My obsession continues. My love for word art is deep. I took a shot at creating my own version of an oversized word art piece to use in my fall entryway versus buying a ridiculously expensive one. I’ve made smaller pieces before, but I wanted a BIG one this time around! A statement piece…

Do you know how much money a 24″x36″ framed piece of anything costs?! or a even a canvas?! Way more than I wanted to throw down. Especially since its all about fall. I mean, I would have loved to order a custom something or other for above my entryway table, but the truth is… my entryway mirror will probably end up going right back in its spot after this season is over. Unless I decide to make a new piece for each season or holiday to put in the frame! I could totally do that. #dontgetaheadofyourself
How to DIY oversized word ART -Fall entryway - fall vignette - DIY word art - fall decor - This is our BlissI decided to create a DIY version and ended up spending less than $20! Yep – 20 bucks.

Supplies:

24″x36″ frame
MS Word or other document creation software
Flash Drive (to save your file & take to copy/print shop)
24″x36″ black & white print
3-Inch Flat Corner Brace (4-Pack)
Rub ‘n Buff Wax

Fullscreen capture 9172015 84159 PMSo let’s start from the beginning. A couple of weeks ago, I found large, 24″x36″ frames on mega sale at Michaels for $14.99, regularly priced $49.99. Such a steal! I bought one white and one grayish-brown. After calling my local FedEx/Kinko’s to check to make sure they could print that size, I sat down to work on my piece.
Fullscreen capture 9172015 90501 PM
I came up with a list of fall-related words and typed them out in MS Word with one space in between each word or group of words. I then started playing around with the fonts and point size of each word or phrase until it was sized just right and I was happy with how it looked. I ended up moving some of the words onto different lines in order to make the sizing work out. I wanted to take up as much of the full line as I could without the words being too small or the phrase running over to the next line. Each font is sized differently as well. I get download my fonts from dafont.com.

[Some of the fonts I used in this piece were: Bernardo Moda, Jenna Sue, Fascii Scraggly BRK, Architect’s Hand, AR DELANEY. You can enter these into the search box on the site and then download the file to your computer. They will be automatically added to the drop down list of fonts in MS Word.]

Next, I saved it as a PDF file, loaded it onto my flash drive and headed down the street to FedEx/Kinkos. I asked them to print my piece in black and white on a 24″x36″ sheet of paper. It cost me $4.67 to do it.
fedex receipt*[Important step!: you must save your .doc file as a .pdf because of the specialty fonts. If your copy / print shop does not have the exact same fonts on their computers, then they won’t show up. I didn’t know this when I went in to have another piece printed awhile back. They didn’t clue me in on the pdf secret. They told me I needed to go back home and load all of the different font files onto my flash drive so they could download them to their computer. so that is what I did! uggghhh]

Next, after opening up the back of the frame and slipping my piece of paper inside, I realized I needed to trim about 1/4″ off the side and top so it laid flat and didn’t bubble underneath the plexiglass. Once it was smoothed out, I fastened the back on and admired my work.
It was missing something though.

I ran upstairs to check my craft & décor stash for some flat corner braces. I was pretty sure I had an extra package left after making these frames. It was just what my new frame needed. Mine were silver, so I used a little Rub ‘n Buff Wax in Antique Gold on them before attaching to the frame.
DIY oversized word art - flat corner braces - This is our BlissAfter a couple minutes to let the wax set, I placed the “L” on the corner, then drilled in each of the 4 screws into the predrilled holes, until I was all the way through the surface of the frame. I did this on each of the 4 corners.

5 Fab Friday Finds [Natural Fiber Rugs]

Heeeello! You know what day it is, right?! Time for my 5 Fab Finds!
5 Fab Friday finds - natural fiber rugs - This is our BlissToday I am sharing some natural fiber rugs I am obsessing over right now. They are called natural fiber because of the natural elements they are made with – jute, sisal, sea grass, a combination of these or some may even be mixed with other materials such as silk or cotton. They give a beachy, earthy feel to a space and comfy, cozy & earthy is just the look I am aiming for in our newly finished basement. We have kind of a rustic, earthy, industrial vibe going on down there and this type of rug will fit in perfectly in the bar area / by the walk-out door. The rug will sit on tile, is near the stacked stone wall and lots of pretty wood tones surround the space as well.

I’m super bummed because I found the greatest natural woven rug at HomeGoods, but after bringing it home & setting it down, I realized it was too small for the doorway. It couldn’t be centered because it didn’t cover enough ground and if it were to be placed right in front of the side of the double door that opens, several inches hung over in front of the other side. It probably sounds confusing, but I returned that one and determined I need a 3′ x 5′ rug.

So, I have narrowed down my top natural fiber rug choices to share with you today! You will have to help me out and leave your fave in the comments section. I am hoping to pull the trigger on one of them sometime next week. Hoping for one of them to go on major sale, too – HA!

Natural fiber rugs - beachy, earthy vibe rugs - This is our Bliss1 || 2 || 3 || 4 || 5

All 5 of these rugs are at slightly different price points, but are all relatively reasonable in the 3′ x 5′ size – yay for me! I love a good bargain and nice rugs are hard to come by at a decent price, but I feel these ones fall in line with where I want to be.
917PFpypCEL__SL1500_This rug is from Amazon (I know, right?!) They never cease to amaze me with their wide range of selection! They actually offer a ton of great home décor items and I buy the bulk of my DIY supplies here, too. You just can’t beat the convenience of free 2-day shipping as a prime member. This rug runs $52 for the 3’x5′, so definitely fits in my budget. I love the fringe on the ends and also that it isn’t gray – I have a lllllot of gray in the basement, so this would be a nice contrast on the dark tile flooring
122KEN0375I know, this one IS gray, but I really love it. It looks soft, but still has that natural, jute look. I am big into geometrics & playing around with pattern, so this subtly bold design would be fun to incorporate into our space.
Home DecoratorsI am drawn to this Home Decorators Collection rug because of the zig-zag/chevron pattern. Part of me is over that trend, but the other part of me still loves it. And in the natural fiber, it isn’t quite so bold, but still has a modern edge.
46979_XXX_v1This gem is from World Market and I have to say, I really like the contrast of the natural tan with the black. It is a nice geometric pattern, but not too trendy. It has a slight Aztec-look to, which I like.
122KEN0401Last, but not least, is this one from Rugs USA. They frequently run sales and there is always free shipping in the US – bonus. I love the tan & white color, but the design is also unique & sort of eye-catching. I’m not even sure what the pattern is, but it reminds me of knotted ropes. Decisions, decisions!
Natural fiber rugs - beachy, earthy vibe rugs - This is our BlissSo, please HELP! I could really use your thoughts on what to do! Which is your favorite natural fiber rug?

Books & BBQ Bday Bash

Books & BBQ | Henry’s 3rd Birthday Bash

Our oldest turned 3 last month and that month, was a crazy month for us! 2 trips (you can read about one of them – our trip to Savannah here), a couple rounds of houseguests & the big birthday! We wanted to have a birthday party with a casual, summer feel, but of course, still kid-like & special for him. He is quite the little bookworm and has been since an itty bitty baby, it seems. Now he’s already reading, writing, spelling and pretty much schooling us whenever we mispronounce something or make a grammatical error. #thatswhatkidsarefor, right? To correct their parents and point out their mistakes?!

I can only imagine how this will go in about 5-10 years 😉

So, I came up with “BOOKS & BBQ” as the party theme and hoped after returning back from Haven just 4 days before the party, I would still be able to host in style without having to run around like a madwoman! I usually end up taking on quite a bit when it comes to little men bday party prepping (see past parties – golf themeABC’s & 123’s & Safari-style Soiree), but this time, I TRIED to scale back. I still ordered the best cookies in town, but decided to have a custom favorite things / stats faux chalkboard made this time. As much as I love to DIY, sometimes you just have to outsource that stuff to make life a little bit easier:) So after asking my mom to pack up some of her décor pieces to bring to town, it was pretty easy to put together from there – Balloons, fresh flowers, red & white gingham…eats, sweets & strawberry margaritas… plus family & friends – how could it go wrong?!

Here is how it all turned out…

5 fab friday finds - round mirrors - basement bathroom - this is our bliss

5 Fab Friday Finds [Round Mirrors]

Its here! Friday! Woo hoo!
These last few weeks have been a bit crazy with my trip to Haven and our mini-vacay in Savannah, then home for Henry’s 3rd birthday and then I left a week later to help my mom decorate their new house in Arizona and just got back this last Tuesday!! I am so looking forward to the weekend at home and hopefully a little normalcy next week. Posts are in progress right now for everything I have been up to! I have so much to share and don’t want you to miss a thing, so please check back soon for new goodies 🙂

As you may know, we’ve been working on our finishing our basement since April! We hired a general contractor to do the construction and his subs did most everything else. I love to DIY, but not in that sort of complex-complicated-putting-up-walls-type-of-way. My kind of DIY consists of an upholstery project (hopefully more to come!), an occasional crafty décor piece (I did a ton of them in Simon’s Nursery) and then lots of lots decorating & accessorizing! 🙂 Maybe someday I will become more advanced. Maybe.
After a couple breaks on their end and a couple trips on our end, the space is really shaping up! I shared a few sneak peaks on instagram recently of our new lights and the stacked stone feature wall in the bar area. I’m trying to crank away at designing the layout for the wall décor, buying things as I see them and then a couple of larger purchases to chip away at, too – bar stools, wine fridge / beverage cooler, media center, play space bookcase or shelving unit and the bathroom mirror. I have an idea of what I want each of these pieces to look like, but haven’t completely narrowed down my findings yet.

I’m sharing my top picks for round mirrors today and would so love & appreciate your opinion!!

Here they are:

I’m leaning towards a gold or black mirror between 25″-30″. I probably will stay on the minimalistic side, but couldn’t help but fall in love with #1. Sunburst mirrors are literally everywhere right now and all with their own unique traits. This gold one is from Amazon – can you believe it? I have always been a huge Amazon fan, but still can not get over the variety of items they carry. I mean, isn’t Amazon everyone’s one-stop-shop, especially with the convenience of free 2-day shipping as an Amazon prime member??! ok.. back to mirrors.

I must admit, right now my number one pick is actually mirror #4.

West Elm round gold mirrorI’ve seen it in person in the store and love its simplicity and color, too, of course. It is 30″ round and would fit nicely above our new vanity and under the new vanity lights!

I really love how love how the vanity & lights look so far in the space. All it needs, is a mirror + a some wall art. Easy enough! Our shower door was installed this week along with glass shelves on the stone wall in the bar. I will have plenty more photos coming as the basement spaces finish up!

I’ll be working down there this weekend, so be sure to follow me on instagram for more sneak peaks!

Have the B E S T weekend!!

What do you think? Go with #4 or one of the others?
