My Home Style Christmas Tree Edition | Bold Neutral Glam

When it comes to decorating our home, my style can pretty much be summed up in 3 simple words: bold, neutral and glam. When it comes to trimming the tree, I don’t venture too far outside my comfort zone with the exception of the use of the color red! If you take a look around here during any month besides December, red can only be found in 2 places – the playroom and in my wine glass. no joke. I truly prefer a neutral color pallette with bold, distinctive prints and patterns with a hefty side of glitz and glam. #metallicsaremyjam

Today, I am breaking down the elements of our lovely Living Room tree for the My Home Style Blog Hop Christmas: Tree Edition hosted by Casa Watkins! If you are stopping over from My Life From Home, welcome!! A group of home decor & DIY bloggers have joined forces to celebrate style…style in the home and in the spirit of the season, style found in our Christmas trees!

Now let’s take a peek at this Bold Neutral Glam Christmas Tree, shall we?
my home style christmas tree edition collage - bold neutral glam - thisisourbliss.comHere is how my tree came to life!

Since pattern play is one of my favorite ways to incorporate a variety of prints, I am usually inspired by a fabulous fabric, typically in the form of a pillow, but for the tree I was inspired by both fabric and wrapping paper.

It's raining outside, the boys are awake but miraculously quiet & calm... So, I'm having a #holiday #crafternoon & in case you were wondering, Pandora is set to "Mariah Carey Holiday #canthelpit #cantwaittodecorate #targetchristmas #christmas2015 #stripes

I’ll admit, I am a bit of a wrapping paper hoarder collector. Those rolls always find a way to jump into my shopping cart year-round, so by the time the holidays are upon us, I have a pretty hefty stash.
easy christmas decor - wrapped coffee table books supplies - This is our BlissI will always love a class black and white stripe and in my opinion, you just can’t go wrong with animal print. The black, white, tan and gold triangle geo print seemed fun and well…bold, neutral and glam, so it came home with me, too. The red plaid paper above was a great find. I had been searching for red plaids that didn’t have any green in them and it was tough! I lucked out with that roll from Michaels!

Another plaid you’ll see around the house this time of the year are my Amazon plaid napkins which I turned into pillows AND used on my Christmas table! I couldn’t resist after whipping up a couple napkin pillows up for fall.

Now, back to the tree…
My Home Style Christmas tree edition - bold neutral glam - gold sequin tree picks - thisisourbliss.comI have gold everywhere and bits of silver, black, white and red sprinkled throughout. Merry, Bright & Blissful Holiday Home | 12 Days of Christmas Home Tour

It’s here! It’s here! No, not Christmas morning, but the day I finally get to share all of the holiday dreamin’ & schemin’ I’ve been up to over here!

When I was invited to participate in the 12 Days of Christmas Tour of Homes hosted by Jenny from Evolution of Style, I was nearly speechless! So after I pinched myself, I said yes and got to work. Well, not at that very second, but it does seem as if the holidays have been on the brain since August 😉

The tour kicked off last Monday, December 1st and the homes have been nothing short of brilliant. Everyone has their own unique style and way of spreading holiday cheer throughout each room in their home – gobs and gobs of inspiration! I love it!

Well, let’s roll, shall we?!

Merriness, brightness & blissfulness is all around! All around our home & all over the blog this week! There is A LOT to share, so it will probably spill over into next week, too. I hope you are okay with loads of holiday inspiration coming directly from me to you!
Merry Bright & Blissful Holiday home - front door - This is our BlissFirst up, is the front door. You do see it right from the get-go, so I thought it only seemed fitting as the starting point for the tour. Right?!
holiday home tour - This is our Bliss front door - front door christmas wreath - This is our BlissI adore our front door. It may or may not have been the deciding factor when we bought this house back in 2012. We couldn’t help, but fall in love.
minted photo art - holiday front door and christmas wreath - This is our BlissWhile decking the halls and everywhere else, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to put alongside the front door. When my minted photo art pieces arrived, I knew they won the coveted spot!

I like black, white and gold to trickle throughout our home, room-by-room and before decorating for Christmas, the foyer was really lacking in that particular color (or lack thereof) department.
holiday home tour - christmas entryway - minted photo gifts - gold foil - This is our BlissBy hanging my gold foil-pressed photo art prints, it totally did the trick – classic black and white, with a subtle pop of gold glitz! Minted’s selection of photo gifts is pretty stellar. Add your pictures, personalize it, monogram it, glam it up! There are so many other options if the shiny foil detail isn’t your thing…but, seriously. Why would it not be your thing?!

Adding something a bit personal also seemed like a good idea, since its the very last thing visitors see before exiting our home.

I didn’t do a whole lot to the front door space, but I spruced it up a little with a simple poinsettia topiary to add a pop of red. Speaking of red, you’ll be seeing a lot of that color around here for Christmas. I love what it does to my neutral space!!

Easy Holiday Decor | DIY Wrapped Present Ornaments

So, you’re still with me on the let’s-do-this-christmas-decorating-thing-the-easy-way, right?

Well, I’ve been sprinkling a little holiday this and that from room-to-room and now that we have glitter, glue, tape, tree trimmings, shards of broken ornaments (I know, bad mom for not getting the memo on shatter-proof) sawdust from the mantle makeover project (deets coming soon) and who knows what else, I’m about ready to call it a DAY!

After the mantle is wrapped up this weekend, we can get our family room tree up and after that, the house is DONE. Holiday hoopla or Christmas cheer, whichever you prefer, has kicked into high gear and I can’t wait to spill it all! Next week is full-steam ahead! I’ll be sharing my holiday home tour for the 12 Days of Christmas Tour of Homes on Tuesday, December 8th, but will be giving you a daily dose of decorating delight!

So, I’m sort of a pattern-girl. I like bold prints. I like to mix them. I like to match them. I like black, white and gold everything. I also like to coordinate. You see, when I find something I like, I tend to go all-in. For example, when I see wrapping paper I like, I buy it – all. year. long.
easy christmas decor - wrapped coffee table books supplies - This is our BlissI decided to go with a black, white, gold and red color scheme this year which basically means, I get to use everything in my normal, everyday decor, but just add a punch of red. I’m really digging the way the house looks with splashes of color right now!
I found a few neutral wrapping paper patterns and then a red plaid one that I love.

diy wrapped present ornaments - tree and chair this is our blissI love the prints so much that I thought I would toss a little IN the tree, too.

I give you my DIY wrapped present ornaments!
Easy holiday decor- DIY wrapped present ornaments - This is our BlissRounding up the supplies was super easy, because I had nearly everything – wrapping paper, ribbon, scissors, tape, glue gun…The base is a 3″x3″ canvas. I bought 2 packages (6 pieces per) at Michaels.
DIY present ornament supplies - This is our BlissYou really could use anything with some thickness – cardboard, even. To be honest, I was a little lazy and felt it would be easier to buy the canvases than hack up a cereal box or one of my daily Amazon deliveries.

You can whip up 12 -15 of these guys in no time. I actually love to wrap gifts, so this was kind of therapeutic for me!

It doesn’t take much paper at all, so you will have plenty left for your big packages.
diy wrapped present ornaments - tree and chair this is our blissI like how it creates some visual interest within the tree since 95% of most ornaments are round, or spikey & curly-q, in my case!

A Little of This + A Little Bit of Bliss Vol. 2 [thankful + be on the lookout!]

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with family and friends!! I am feeling extremely thankful for so many wonderful things in my life right now. So very thankful we were able to be back home at my parents’ house in Iowa to spend several days with my family over Thanksgiving and grateful to have been able to visit my in-laws for a few days the week before. With both of our families out of town, we truly cherish the weekends & holidays with them at our house or theirs because unfortunately, they aren’t just a quick trip down the street or the next town over. It takes a bit more planning to get together, but we all work out scheduling as best as we can!

We got back home last night and got one of our trees up and decorated! Since we are still in the midst of our fireplace makeover, we are waiting until later this week to get the 2nd one out in the family room. I’ve said it before, but seriously, this fireplace situation is inching a liiiittle too close to Christmas for comfort. I am saying my prayers we can get this thing wrapped up in the next few days because….

well, my home needs to be photographed!!

As the holidays are quickly approaching (wait…what? They are?!) I am thrilled to announce I will be teaming up with 15 other fabulous and amazingly talented bloggers for the 12 Days of Christmas Tour of Homes!
12 days of christmas tour
Yes, that’s right! This is the 3rd annual tour and when I was asked to join in the fun this year, I think my heart skipped a little beat! I have oohed and aahed over the lovely homes in this very tour in years’ past and I think I will have to pinch myself when my day of the tour officially arrives. I will be sharing the links and photos from others’ tours here on the blog as well as across social media, so watch out, December 1st. We are coming at you with some WOW! Stay tuned… it truly will be fabulous!

This is sort of random, but since I’m feeling all-around thankful right now, I had to share! I’m sort of beside myself at the emails I’ve been receiving lately – companies reaching out to ME to inquire about working together. Say WHAAA?! I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I am thrilled at some of the opportunities I’ve been chatting about and not to say they will all actually happen, but STILL!! Partnerships of all sizes! It’s not even about the money. I mean, getting paid for this little gig of mine would be fabulous, but I have found such fulfillment from taking an idea that evolved in the middle of the night and seeing it through to a published post, learning new things, the friendships I’ve created and the camaraderie and support among the blogging community, hearing from my readers that I have inspired them in some way and now, finding out various companies have actually noticed me and my work! Its an incredible feeling and I am beyond thankful for where I have been over the last year and a half and ecstatic to see what’s next!

Speaking of next, I will be reviewing this year, similar to my 2014 highlights and setting new goals for 2016 (see my 2015 goals here) in a post sometime in the beginning of the new year. I hope you’ll stick around to see how 2015 wraps up and how next year kicks off!

I’m pumped, are you?!

Not to get too far ahead of the game though… we still have the entire month of December to get through! And lots of Black Friday / Cyber Monday / all-around shopping madness to survive as well! I avoided shopping in the stores on Friday, but indulged in some online retail therapy all weekend to jumpstart a few checkmarks on my lists!
online shoppingUmmmmmm….. TRUE!

Easy Holiday Decor | Wrapped Coffee Table Books

Let’s do this holiday decorating thing the easy way.

Who’s with me?

I am not going to pretend that hauling Christmas decorations out of storage – box by box, putting together the tree(s) or going to pick one out, then trimming the tree, and spreading holiday cheer throughout the house is always easy. It can actually be quite a process. For some, its done all in one day and for others, its spread out over several days or maybe even an entire week or more, but I’m going to show you a few ways to add a little extra holiday pizzazz to your home using your normal everyday decor.

We’re just going to spice it up a bit by making it fun & festive and nearly, free!
easy holiday decor - simple ways to make your home fun & festiveThis holiday season, I am going to share several ideas for ways to add simple touches to various spaces in your home – whether it be a table, wall or bookshelf.

First up today, is your coffee table!

Whether you have a fully styled coffee table like in our formal living room or a stack of coffee-stained magazines and a couple of peanut butter smeared remotes like our family room coffee table, this quick and easy idea is for EVERYONE!

Supplies:

Basic gift wrapping supplies – 3 rolls of various wrapping paper, tape, scissors & ribbon
coffee table books (2)
old magazines (3)
random book (1)

easy christmas decor - wrapped coffee table books supplies - This is our BlissFirst, I started with the 2 coffee table books normally in the tray on the table and then rounded up a stack of 3 magazines and a smaller book from the bookcase shelf.
wrapped magazines - coffee table christmas gifts - this is our BlissI wanted to have some added height and varying thicknesses and widths, so I wrapped the 3 magazines by stacking them on top of each other and wrapping them up like a present. Then I wrapped the individual book by itself and lastly, the two coffee table books.

Merry & Oh-so-Bright Minted Holiday cards

*This post is sponsored by minted, however all excitement, opinions and happy thoughts are 100% my own!

The holidays are creeping. Like really creeping up on us. The Christmas décor hasn’t been busted out in its entirety over here yet, but it IS about that time to start thinking about and ordering holiday cards.

I simply adore this tradition.

There is something so warm and nostalgic about sealing an envelope and placing a stamp on the corner just-so. I admit,  handwritten thank you cards and yes, snail mail will always be something I take pride in putting forth that extra bit of effort.

I feel the same way about sending Christmas cards.

I remember being little and helping my mom get the Christmas cards and envelopes all prepped and ready to go out in the mail. We would listen to Christmas music and drink hot chocolate. I couldn’t wait to “grow-up” so I could send out my very own Christmas cards  🙂

If you’ve been hanging around here long enough, then you know my love for all things glitz, glam, shimmer and sparkle runs deep. like real deep. Basically an obsession.  I can’t seem to walk away from anything that gleams gold, so why would our holiday cards be any different?

Have you seen the foil-pressed holiday card collection from Minted?!
Fullscreen capture 11102015 74711 PMIf you aren’t familiar with Minted, you need to sit down immediately and go check them out!

Minted is an online marketplace of independent artists who create the most jaw-dropping, stunning designs – from artwork and calendars, to stationary and home décor (did someone say pillows?!) I’ve ordered a number of prints and custom photo gifts (you may remember them from the guestroom revamp project) in the past and have been so super pleased! They even allow you to customize your very own holiday wrapping gear – paper, stickers, fabrics and more. And their holiday cards? Seriously gorgeous.

I’m a personal fan of their foil-pressed collection – the cards actually S H I N E ! You can choose to have your card dazzle with silver, gold or the new hot trend, rose gold. Truly beautiful.

The design process is a cinch – take a peek!

You start by selecting a design, choosing flat or folded and then your paper type – there are 5 to choose from! and then uploading your photo…

For the foil-pressed cards (my personal favorite!) you choose which bright and shiny finish you want (gold, silver or rose gold)…choose your shape and then design your front by inserting your custom text in the box.

Next, design the back…

Don’t want to do your own mail merge or hand-write your own envelopes? No problem! They have FREE recipient address service available! So convenient 😉

I really love this address style, too.
Fullscreen capture 11102015 75009 PMFinally, a preview!   You even get a free digital proof to ensure your design is exactly how you want it.

It’s that simple! Of course, I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun of sharing our actual Christmas cards with you all, but we just might end up going with one of these options – you’ll have to wait and see! Here are a few more of my favorites!

Which is your favorite? Are you already scheming your design? 324 foil-stamped cards to choose from, plus countless more designs! I may or may not already have my eyes set on next year’s pick!

I can’t wait to skip to the mailbox… or rather, load the boys up in the car to drive to the post office – they love helping me drop envelopes in the drop box – and get these babies out! fa la la la la… la la… la.. LA!

Happy 4th of July -- This is our Bliss

Happy Fourth of July!

Just popping in to wish you all a wonderful F O U R T H  O F  J U L Y  W E E K E N D ! ! !

Whether you are backyard barbequing, beach bummin’ or pool partying with family & friends, hopefully we can all take a moment to give thanks and appreciation for our rights and freedom as Americans. It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle & bustle of special activities, vacations or party planning around these historical holidays and lose sight of the true meaning behind them. I am trying to be better at remembering the why’s around days like this so we can teach our boys while they are young!

So, wherever you are and whoever you’re with, I hope the weather is lovely and you all enjoy your time together 🙂 Have fun & be safe!

Holiday Happenings Recap

Hello & happy 2015! I am shocked that it is already the 5th day of the new year! After a crazy, fun-filled, super-busy 2 weeks of holiday & family shenanigans, we are back to our normal routine. We traveled to Central Illinois & then to Iowa over the week of Christmas and spent 5 days with both sides of our families. It was really special to be able to see everyone, but especially my husband’s aunt, who traveled to Illinois to visit from Qatar and then be able to have another Christmas with my grandparents. I was able to see all but one set of grandparents this year. All are living, but the extra added bonus, is that they are all remarried, so I actually have 8 wonderful grandparents in my life. My grandparents in Arizona were the only ones I didn’t see, but a trip down there is only a couple of months away 🙂

After the eating and drinking and presents and more presents over those 10 days away, we were fortunate enough to have Ted home with us all of last week! He works a very hectic schedule throughout the year, where 10-12 hour days are the norm and weekly travel to his second office located 2 hours south is a regularly scheduled event. Taking 2 weeks off at the end of December and having him all to ourselves has become part of our holiday routine and we loved every minute of it this year! We got home from my parents’ house last Sunday night, so last week was all about us – just the 4 of us! We filled our days with a trip to the children’s museum, lunch at a kid’s train-inspired restaurant, family movies & shows snuggled on the couch, more books & puzzles than I can count, lazy mornings in bed followed by leisurely sipping cups of coffee & yummy breakfast (compliments of the breakfast king himself), dance parties after dinner and a family-friendly New Year’s Eve at our friends’ house (see the NYE drink sticks I made to take with!). Ted & Henry also had a special “fun day” including a trip to Jump Zone and a lunch date, just the 2 of them. Oh! I almost forgot! We had a “date day” last week, too 🙂 Our sitter came to watch the boys while we went out to lunch, did some shopping, saw a movie (while lounging in those fancy leather recliners) and then out for dinner & drinks. A fabulous 8 hours away from home! must. do. again.

This past weekend we deconstructed the trees and sorted and packed away all of the holiday decorations. I also seriously dedicated a HUGE chunk of time to unpacking suitcases, shopping bags and boxes of gifts and then furiously plucking things out of the closets sack up and donate. With everything we brought into the house, we must send just as much OUT! Today was bittersweet. It was just me and the boys! Although it was nice getting back into the swing of things and finding our groove again, we sure did miss someone. Now that the house is returning to normal, I have started to put some serious thought into my goals for this year. What are my hopes and dreams? What do I want to do for me? What do I want to accomplish for our family? What projects am I going to tackle in our home? Where do I see my blog going this year? These are just a few questions I am asking myself right now as I start to compile a list of focus areas for the year. Last year was an incredible year and I want 2015 to be just as memorable, although I don’t think we will be having another baby this year, so memorable in different ways!!

Next, I will be sharing a 2014 Year in Review and 2015 Goals. Following that, I will share tips for de-cluttering & organizing different areas of the house, my plans for a couple of room “refreshes” and more DIY’s just about anyone can take on!

Thank you for reading and I hope to see you back here again SOON!

sig main 1P.S. I love how it was an ugly brown Christmas, although decent temperatures and now we have several inches of pretty, fluffy white snow on the ground! Why and how does this happen? Fingers crossed for next year!

DIY Tree Skirt

Good afternoon, all! I hope you are enjoying this crazy busy month! That almost doesn’t make sense. For me, yes, I am soaking the month of December in little by little each day. It has been a bit hectic, but my philosophy is to crank up the Christmas tunes and sip my coffee or wine (and maybe indulge in a few sweets, too…they always helps) I mentioned last week we would be traveling back to Iowa for my friend’s wedding and we did just that, this past weekend. It was a beautiful wedding and I had the best time seeing old friends and catching up! We got home last night after 4 days at home. Our traveling did put a little damper on my posting schedule, but I hope to squeeze in a few more before Christmas! Today, I am sharing a 5 minute DIY Tree skirt for the Christmas tree, that is!

I have actually never had a tree skirt until this year. After wrapping, the gifts typically sit under the tree for a few days and then they quickly get packed up into boxes and loaded into the car since we usually travel to see family for Christmas. I decided my tree was looking a little naked underneath, so a skirt seemed like an easy solution. I also noticed we still have the price tag on our tree stand, so I wanted the skirt to sit just on top of the tightening pegs of the stand.

Don’t mind the random tennis ball behind the tree… boys 🙂

So, I gathered my (very few) materials and got started. I have been picking up (or making my own holiday) décor and gift wrapping materials in reds, golds, black and white, so when I spotted this black and white checkered tablecloth on Amazon, I knew it would be the perfect back-drop for our wrapped gifts. Keep reading for a quick tutorial. It really can’t get any easier!

Supplies:

DIY Tree skirt - round tablecloth - no sew - supplies

round tablecloth
measuring tape
scissors
sharpie
paper cup

Instructions:

Lay tablecloth out in an open area. Measure over halfway across the diameter. My tablecloth was 70″ round, so I measured over 35″. Next, cut across the tablecloth to your half-way point. Then, I placed a paper cup in the middle of the tablecloth so that the end of my previous cut was centered under the cup.

Trace around the cup with a sharpie and cut around the outside edge of your mark.

That is it! Place your DIY tree skirt under your Christmas tree and load it up with gifts!

This is about the closest thing to a pretty present I’ve got right now!

Since I have loads of wrapping to do, ours will sit empty until tomorrow (only tomorrow, I hope!).

I will be back next with a few easy ways to dress up your holiday packages. Off to wrap, I go!
Thanks for reading and goodnight 🙂
