Chic Modern Eclectic Master Bedroom | Before Photos & Mood Board

The beginning stages of a Chic Modern Eclectic Master Bedroom Retreat | This is our Bliss | www.thisisourbliss.com

It’s sort of funny to me that I’m gearing up to begin introducing a few big room projects to you guys, just as the Spring 2017 One Room Challenge is wrapping up! But hey… I wasn’t prepared to begin overhauling a space when the challenge began at the beginning of April, so we’ll just roll on with these spaces now! Heck. Maybe I’ll even try to work the same 6 week timeline. There’s nothing like a deadline to put me into a full-blown crazy-girl-mode, but on the other hand, that crazy girl actually gets stuff DONE!

You’ve probably noticed the silence around here lately. I’ve posted here and there, but I haven’t been inspired to work on the house and there’s definitely been a lack of desire to sit down and actually BLOG about a project. It finally clicked today. I’ve been spinning my wheels trying to make decisions on final details for a few rooms and was getting nowhere. Hours of browsing art and curtains and rugs and this and that online, but couldn’t pull the trigger on anything. Frustrated and annoyed with myself, I’d chalk it up to another wasted nap-time [which any SAHM knows naptime is the golden hour] literally accomplishing not much more than a load of laundry. Well, what recently set-in, was the realization that I have been trying to put the finishing touches on these rooms without a plan.

Without a concrete vision of any sort.

I mean, there are always ideas in my head, but nothing was sketched or physically laid out in a mood board.

So guess what? That’s what I did!

I’m talking about a mood board for the master bedroom! First, let’s peek at the before photos of our bedroom…which are not your typical “before” photos because I got excited after we moved in last summer and wallpapered our master bedroom in the fall, but then didn’t touch any of the other 3 walls! So, I’ll show you a progression of photos of that wall and then a few others of the rest of the room that I snapped this week.

The very first before…

then I did some *minor* styling…

Basically trying to recreate the look I shared in my nightstand styling post in our master bedroom in the old house!

Then this happened…

Okay, now are you guys ready to see what the rest of the room looked like after I shared the pretty wallpaper photos in this post?

Warning. It might frighten you.

Yes. I admittedly took these photos THIS WEEK! I fooled you, right? Sometimes bloggers only share the gorgeous after photos and then hide the ugly truth. The rest of the room was a disaster and I continued to let it remain that way until now!

Soooo…. here is my vision for our Chic Modern Eclectic Master Bedroom.

[*Affiliate links were used below.]

fiddle leaf fig | acrylic bench | seagrass storage bench | dresser | dot round ottoman | pink throw | green pillows | black & white stripe lumbar | leopard pillow | rug | green abstract art | “B” art | black frame abstract art | gold frame abstract art | gold lamps | black & gold orb | white candle | geometric mirror | round gold mirror | wallpaper | green curtains

Paint colors:

SW Tricorn Black | SW Extra White | BM Hunter Green | BM Pink Cloud | BM Inukshuk

A little bit more put together, don’t you think?

With any space in your home, the finishing touches add that final layer of completeness. Sure I have wallpaper on the wall and styled nightstands, but was in dire need of window treatments, wall art and obviously some cleaning and organizing. My vision includes swapping out our current pillows, a new throw, wall art, dresser styling, foot-of-the-bed storage, a bench near the window and a few other styling accessories / finishing touches.

Earlier, you saw the burgandy and mauve colors I had on the bed e and throughout the room (or along the one wall!!) and I want to keep a few subtle pink touches and also accent with a rich forest green. Black and white are always the base colors in each space I create, but a few pops of color help break up the monotony and create some visual interest and a pop of personality. Plus, I think the pink and green will give off a romantic and luxurious vibe – at least that’s what I’m hoping for.

Since I’m planning to share a couple of updates with you as I continue to work my way around the room, here is what you’ll see me tackling:

  • hang curtain rod & panels
  • find a rug
  • gather art & frames for a small gallery wall
  • pick out and hang 2 large statement art pieces on TV wall
  • determine bench and storage situation — possibly a couple ottomans and / or a bench to use for seating to put shoes on as well as store extra blankets and pillows
  • replace ceiling fan
  • relocate full-length mirror?
  • add some greenery
  • pick out / buy or sew new pillows
  • buy new duvet cover

That’s what I’ve got so far, but there’s a strong chance I’ll be adding more to the list as I start checking items off! Typical.

Are you feeling stuck with any projects or to-do’s around the house? Maybe it’s time to sit down, write everything on paper and come up with a gameplan. I’ve discovered that I’m definitely a visual learner and creating these mood boards really helps me transfer the vision from my thoughts to something I can follow along as a guide while I work on a space. One of my favorite parts of a room reveal is comparing the final photos to the mood board to see how the concept has evolved. Typically the overall theme remains the same, but things do change along the way!

Plus, who doesn’t love a good to-do list?!

I’m looking forward to a weekend filled with soccer, grilling out and brunch with my crew! Hopefully I can sneak in a few minutes of couch time with my magazines and a glass of wine! My own mom is coming to town for a visit since my parents just need back to Iowa after spending the last 4.5 moths in their Arizona home! Cheers to Mother’s Day weekend! I hope you mamas out there have a wonderful day spent with those you love!

Maybe you’ve addressed this before and you can point me to an old post or maybe this will be a new idea for a post. How do you digitally put together a mood board? I have no idea where to start. I have things that I have pinned on Pinterest or see things I like online, but I don’t know what to do next. What goes into getting those onto a ‘mood board’?

Hi Michele! Thanks for your note. I actually don’t have a blog post to point you to, but I can tell you that I made this particular design board using olioboard.com. Check it out and play around with it! I’ve also used Polyvore and picmonkey.com. In picmonkey, you start with a blank canvas and then add your own “overlay” but adding photos from your computer. For example, if you visit a retailer’s website and love a pillow, you would save the jpg image of the pillow to your computer and then upload it into picmonkey. I hope this helps a little bit. My biggest piece of advice is to visit one of these sites and then spend some time getting familiar with its capabilities for creating your mood board. Once you start working on one, it will make more sense and eventually get easier with some practice. Good luck!!
